Voice over IP

What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also referred to as IP telephony or Internet Telephony. It is another way of making phone calls, using the Internet to make the calls cheaper or completely free. The ‘phone’ part is not always present any more, as you can communicate without a telephone and use your computer instead.

What are the advantages of using VoIP?

Using VoIP has a number of advantages over the traditional phone system. The main reason for which people are turning to VoIP technology is the cost. VoIP is said to be cheap, but people can use it for making “free” calls to other VoIP connected users.

There are many ways of using VoIP technology. It all depends on where and how you will be making the calls. It could be at home, at work, in your corporate network, during a travel and even on the beach.

VoIP is Often Free

The great thing about VoIP is that it taps additional value from the existing Internet infrastructure without additional costs. VoIP transmits the sounds you make over the Internet to other VoIP users, using the IP Protocol. This is how you can communicate without paying for more than your monthly Internet bill. You can also make calls using traditional phones and WiFi enabled mobile phones.

If VoIP is free, then what’s cheap?

VoIP can be used for free between VoIP users on the same network and even, in some cases, with mobile and landline phones. However, when it is used to completely replace the standard PSTN service, then it has a price. But this price is considerably cheaper than standard phone calls.

Is VoIP reliable?

VoIP is a mature technology which has already achieved wide acceptance and use. It is being used by all the global telecommunications companies to improve quality and reduce cost. The growth of VoIP today can be compared to that of the Internet in the early 90’s. Businesses are getting more and more conscious of the cost savings and the technical advantages they can reap by using VoIP in their businesses.

If you have a reliable or business class quality Internet connection you can get a VoIP phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of using a phone company like BT.

Why use VOIP?

There are several reasons to use VOIP

  • Lower cost of converged networking

  • Increased functionality

  • Unified communications

  • Flexible and immediate use

Lower Cost

VoIP calls to other on-net VoIP users are free. Calls to PSTN and mobile networks delivered over VoIP costs less. You can also benefit from cost savings due to using a single network to carry voice and data. This is known as convergence, with your Internet connection being used to deliver VoIP as well as data and Internet services without any additional costs.

Increased Functionality

VoIP makes things easy that are difficult or expensive with traditional phone networks and PBX systems

  • Incoming phone calls are automatically routed to your VOIP phone wherever you are connected to the Internet . Take your VOIP phone with you on a trip, and anywhere you connect it to the Internet, you can receive your incoming calls.

  • Traditional ISDN PBX functions and features are available and can be configured immediately without any capital costs.
